Apparently–becausehe’swillingtogooutonalimbforyou.
Thephrasetoexamine,ofcourse,is“outonalimb”.Here,“limb”doesnotrefertothehumanlimb,anarmoraleg.Instead,itreferstoabranchofatree,which,ofcourse,islimb-like.
Outonalimb?
Thatmeansyouhaveclimbedhighupatalltree,goingfartherandfartheroutonaleaningbranchinordertoreachfor,say,aripeningfruit.
Ofcourse,thefartheroneisoutonalimb(branch),thegreatertheriskonerunsofthebranchbreakingunderone’sweight.

Hence,metaphoricallyspeaking,“outonalimb”becomessynonymouswithdoingsomesingular,unusual,difficult,riskyandunpopulartask.
