Anotherwaytoaskthesamequestion:WhydidGhanaattractsomanyinvestorsinthepast,butnolongerdoes?
GhanaisacountryinAfrica.That’safact,somethingweallknow.Butthat’saboutallIknowaboutthatcountry.Ihavenoidea,forexample,whyithasgonefrombeingadarlingforinvestorstowhatitisnow,acountrythatattractsnobody.
Thatis,ifyoutake“zero”literally.
But,basically,that’swhatfromherotozeromeans.
“Heroandzero”worksintandembecausethetwowordsrhyme.Heromeanssomebodywho’sheroic,who’sdonesomethinggreat,especiallysomethingbrave.Zero,ontheotherhand,meansexactlythat,nothing.Nil.Naught.Zip.Zilch.
Fromherotozeromeans,therefore,fromsomethingheroictosomethingnotsoheroic,like,notatall.
Metaphoricallyspeaking,ifwesaysomeonehasgonefromherotozero,wemeantopointoutthefactthattheyarenolongerasgoodandsuccessfulastheyoncewere.Quitethecontrary,nowadaystheyarenogood.Once,theywereexemplaryrolemodels.Now,they’renothing.
Thatis,nothingspecial.
“Herotozero”canbeusedtodescribeanysituationinwhichsomeonechangesquicklyfrombeingverypopularorsuccessfultobeingtheopposite–veryunpopularorunsuccessful.

OnSept.10,2001,Giulianiwasalame-duckmayorwhosetermlimitshadexpiredandalreadyhadonefootoutofCityHall’sdoors.Theverynextday,though,followingtheterrorattacks,hewasswiftlytransformedinto“America’sMayor”whocoulddonowrong,tolethissupporterstellit.
Atthetime,theNewYorkTimesreferredtohimas“anationalhero.”
Butoverthecourseofthefollowing20years,themanwhoonceincitedaraceriotinNewYorkCityrevealedhimselftotherestofthecountry–andtheworld–tobethesamepersonwhoBlackpeoplewarnedAmericaaboutmorethanthreedecadesago.
Thatwasespeciallytruewhenhetriedtopullatyrantmoveandextendhismayorship–despitecitywideelectionsscheduledtwomonthslater–andthreatenedlegalactiontoallowhimtorunforre-electioneventhoughtherewasalimitoftwoterms,theendofwhichhewasnearingatthetime.
Whenyoufactorinhow“America’sMayor”triedtoundermineAmerica’sdemocraticprocessbypushingthewidelydebunked“biglie”thatDonaldTrumpwasthevictimofelectionfraud–nottomentionhowGiulianipressuredUkrainianofficialstoinvestigateJoeBidenforbaselessconspiracytheoriesmeanttoelevateTrump’sfailedre-electionefforts–theone-time“hero”oftheSept.11terrorattackshasfinallybeendefinitivelyrecognizedasacompletezero.
KeepreadingtofindbutahandfulofdefinitiveexamplesforhowGiuliani’sensuredhislegacywentfromherotozerooverthecourseof20years,thanksinnosmallparttoTrumpandthecommonbondofracismthetwoofthemshared.
